Mended Musings

My brain is mush this week so I’m interviewing my 5-year-old son. I like to call him Air because it fits his personality. He’s buoyant and lives in the moment more than anyone I know. Just because I think my kid is cute doesn’t mean everyone else will think he’s cute but there’s such an innocence in kids this age that I wanted to share his view of the world.

I live in the Sonoran desert but like most people in the United States, I never put too much thought into where our water comes from. The faucet, duh. Recently, I started collecting water that would usually go down the drain and am using it to water my outdoor plants. I’m embarrassed to admit I had some wasteful habits, like running the hot water to fill a pan so that it’ll boil… Read More

Change is going on all around me; in my personal life, in the lives of people I care about and in the lives of total strangers. In a lot of ways, I really like change but lately I’ve been feeling resistant to it.  You don’t have to be a Trekkie to understand what the Borg meant when they said, “Resistance is futile.”

Something amazing happened to me and it’s deep. Believe it or not, I actually write about more than assholes and Barbie dolls. (On a side note, I promised my cousin Barb that I’d start referring to 20-somethings as amaze-holes instead. It’s more fitting, don’t you think? I did something kind of crazy. I friended the girl who bullied me in elementary school on Facebook. And she accepted. And we talked. And we… Read More

Before my husband and I had kids, we had dogs. We were the kind of dog owners that thought we were superior to parents of children because to us, dogs were clearly superior to children. They don’t keep you up all night crying, you only have to feed them once or twice a day and they poop outside. If you want affection, all you have to do is invite them on the… Read More

I was honored when Janice at Crazy Good Parent asked me to write a guest post.

My husband and I got a late start with baby making. I was 38 when we had our son and a few days shy of 40 with our daughter. Considering that we originally weren’t going to have kids at all, the planets aligned perfectly for us. We had an early miscarriage and a breech baby but we ended up with two remarkably healthy kids.

I love sharing insights that I’ve gained through sobriety, spirituality and parenting and I admit that I like to wrap things up in neat little packages. I don’t usually post until I’ve come to some sort of conclusion that I (and hopefully others) can learn from. I like finding meaning, lessons and most of all, closure. That’s probably why I’ve never written in detail about how I suffered for nearly 30 years… Read More

It was my 5-year-old son’s idea. Kids in his preschool class had been talking about sitting on Santa’s lap and getting their picture taken. He’s usually slow to warm up to new adventures so I was surprised at how eager he was to do this. He mentioned it several days in a row before I finally relented and said with false enthusiasm, “Let’s go to the mall!”

Do you ever wake up feeling like the morning is a continuation of your miserable night before? It was dark when you put the kids to bed and it’s dark when you wake up. They were climbing you like a tower last night and they’re doing it again this morning. There are some mornings when I wake up feeling like I have nothing to give before the sun even comes up. It’s… Read More
