Sandy Hook, Shared Pain & The Gap

We can all agree that we all want a society where we don’t have to live in fear of armed gunmen terrorizing innocent people. The gap between where we are and where we want to be is immense.

It’s infinitely easier to arm ourselves to defend against the destructive, hopeless people who do these things than it is to commit to helping hopeless people who are on the path to becoming destructive.

It’s easier to encourage arming teachers than it is to reach out to people in our lives who are in need of connection and compassion long before they pick up a gun to hurt someone.

It feels like we’re doing something to talk about more guns or more gun laws. But we’re not doing anything to bridge the gap when we don’t address how our society ignores hopelessness, shame and mental illness.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)

  1. I just love this post. I know I’m late getting here, but I have just now spent a few minutes reading around your blog and I love it! You’re such a great writer and you have a beautiful soul. I’m so glad you comment–and that helped me find you in return. I have to tell you, I thought: OH NO! Another great blog I’m going to want to keep up with. Darn! 🙂

    • Thank you so much! Don’t worry, I’m far from prolific with this blog. I’m still trying to find my “new” voice and I very much relate to your post today. It’ll come. Happy New Year Heather!

      • “Love is the only way through it.” So very true Karen. Thank you for this post. I’ve had Jewel’s song “Hands” on repeat in my mind- I won’t be made useless, I won’t be idle with despair. I gather myself around my faith, for light does the darkness most fear.

        • Such a beautiful song. If I let my mind run away from me, I feel helpless. I think all any of us can do is BE the light we want to see in the world. Thanks for you comment my friend. 🙂

    • I know, there are no words. I just feel so strongly the best way I can honor the families is to be a tiny flicker of light in the darkness. If we can put enogh light together…
